17th Century Token, London, Bow Street, Westminster, The crossed shovels, 1653, Farthing, two shovels in saltire, legend surrounding, star at top both sides, THE. CROSSED. SHVFELS, lozenge stops, rev. S over H.B, beaded circles and legend surrounding, *BOW. STREET. 1653., weight 0.79g (Boyne 316; BW 392). Patina of Verdigris both sides, some porosity, fine. The shovels are those of a corn porter, so the issuer was either a chandler of corn or maybe a mealman. The Bow Street referred to shows on Porter's map of 1654 running in an arch behind Westminster market from King Street to Broken Cross at Tothill Street. |
