| Description |
| Macedonian Kings. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (32mm, 16.75g). Imitation of a posthumous issue of Miletos. Struck c. 210-190 BC. Head of young Herakles r., wearing lion skin headdress/ Zeus seated l. on throne, holding eagle and scepter; to l., lion and star above monogram; beneath throne, M; to r., monogram. Cf. Price 2164 for prototype. An apparently unpublished imitation. The style and especially the legend, which is partially written vertically, make it clear that this is an imitative issue. The apparently beardless face of Zeus on the reverse raises the possibility that this is an Arabian imitation in which the Zeus of the prototype has been reimagined as Shams, as on other known Arabian imitations of Alexander-type tetradrachms. |
