RIC IV 491 Obverse damaged or metal flaws, otherwise good Fine relief, reverse sharpness of good VF but some areas enhanced. Flan crack. Greenish-brown patina. The elephant depicted, probably one of those from the games held in AD 212, is shown in a military outfit, possibily the normal appearance for triumphal processions and public spectacles. Extremely rare, apparently the first specimen to be sold during the last decades, no matches of other types in catalogues databases. Banti records only one specimen illustrated in BMC Tav. 74 n. 15. |
