"A coastal city of great antiquity and a center of worship of Adonis, Byblos lay 20 miles north of Berytos. The earliest coinage of Byblos, struck by a succession of local kings, dates only from the mid-5th century B.C. until the conquest of Alexander the Great." Sear
The obverse of this coin shows the "Hoplites" who were citizen-soldiers of ancient Greek city-states who were armed with spears and shields. They used the Phalanx formation as their main fighting tactic which was later adopted by the Spartan army. They were free-citizen farmers and artisans who received military training and were able to afford armor suits and their own weapons. The word hoplite derives from the Greek word for the shield the soldiers used in battle.
Tyrian purple also known as Tyrian red, royal purple, imperial purple or imperial dye is a natural dye which is a secretion produced by species of predatory sea snails known by the name MUREX and the Murex shell is shown on the obverse. Phoenicia means "land of purple" and the Phoenicians traded with this dye in antiquity because the color was greatly prized. Roman emperors and priests in the Temple of Jerusalem used the dye to color their robes.
"The Phoenicians roamed and traded with and colonized the Mediterranean world for a thousand years B.C. and for three hundred years were the undisputed masters. They were lumber traders initially and accumulated great wealth because of it. They invented the Alphabet and circumnavigated Africa and for the Greeks and Israelites they built temples, ships, and cities. They devised passage between the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. In 332 BC. Alexander conquered the powerful and heavily armored Phoenician capital of Tyre which for 1000 years nobody could do. The Phoenicians were the "bedouins of the sea" and "the purple empire of the ancient world."   The obverse depicts the three Hoplites in their galley riding the waves.
