Ancient Coins - Ionia, Miletos 1 1/2 Drachm "Apollo Left & Lion Right" VF RARE Variant!
zoom view
Location: Ionia, Miletos. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo left. Reverse: Lion standing right, looking back at star of eight rays; MOI right; ILIDAS in exergue. Mint & Date of Striking: Ionia, Miletos After 190 BC. References: BMC 119 var (Exergue), SNG Von Aulock 2100 var (Exergue). Size/Denomination/Weight: 14mm, AR Silver 1.5 Drachms (Cistophoric Standard), 2.47g. Numismatic Notes: A rare and attractive variant. The combination of Apollo bust left, and the lion standing right is rare in its own right. To add to this, the exergue of the reverse is an unpublished variant as far as I have seen. This coin is also an interesting one and one half drachms denomination, also known as the Cistophoric Standard. The former collector notes that this coin was "found among [a] 15 coin hoard- Three 1.5 drachms and 12 drachms. [The] others really not in good condition & not worth taking. Coins appeared to be struck w/broken dies. They were heavily worn besides. Last AR struck by this city". From the KL collection, which was compiled in the 70's. It comes with his original 2x2 collection envelope with his attribution written on it. It will also come with my professional attribution in a ready to store 2x2 flip.
