After years of mint inactivity coinage resumed on Cyprus about 192 BC. This was part of a policy
to have the island take over the functions of the lost province of Syria and Phoenicia.
Like most of the former  Syro-Phoenician coinage, the new Cypriote coinage was dated.
Morkholm and Kromann did not record a Salaminian tetradrachm issue fo the joint reign of
Ptolemy VI and VIII.
The early years of Philometor,s reign were much troubled by his jealous younger brother
Euergetes. For five years they ruled jointly, and then Philometor was forced to flee the
country. He went to Rome to plead his cause and was awarded Egypt and Cyprus.
He enjoyed a long reign and, exceptionally among the later kings of Egypt, he was a
capable and kindly man. The historian Polybius says of him "None of his friends did he ever
make away with on any pretext whatever". He died in 145 BC of injuries received
fighting in Syria on behalf of his daughter Cleopatra Thea.
