LYSIMACHOS KING OF THRACE. 305-281 BC. AR DRACHM 4,29 GR.
STRUCK IN EPHESOS, CIRCA 294-287 BC.

Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind, chelys to inner left.
Thompson 177, 171 SNG Oxford 3745.
Excellent style and rare.  Extremely fine/very fine.
From a very old Swiss collection.

Lysimachos was one of the most successful of the successors in his day.
Starting as a satrap of Trace and gradually building a great empire covering most
of the Black Sea and of Asia Minor, and rivalling almost the power of Seleukos untill
defeated by him at Korupedion in 281 BC.
Though his empire vanished, his coins, which were extremely profuse and minted in gold and silver,
remained very influential.
