IONIA. UNKNOWN MINT.  1/24 STATER OF 0,79 GRAMS.  6TH CENTURY B.C. SILVER. ( OBOL ?).

Female ( Maidenhead facing RIGHT).  with close fitting cap or sakkos. with a dotted band with pearls.
In her ears a disc earring. Also her fronthairs are decorated with pearls.
rev: Quadripartite incuse square.

Taf. 15,2 . ( but left facing). This fraction probably unpublished and extremely rare. Extremely fine and nicely
toned.

almost certain these beautiful small silver coin was struck in Ionia. It looks very similar to the widespread
"Nymph Head"diobols which were struck by Phokaia.
The small laughter around the maidens mouth is an artistic creation of the skilled diecutter who  F. Bodenstedt
called: "The master of the weit offenen ausseren lidwinkels".
Almost every head of these small "maidencoins" are individuel created by the diecutter. This was an im-
portant issue in Greek Archaic art. The creation of  free and individual portraits.
a facinating coin of beautiful archaic style. The eye, head an chin and general profile  hark back to

the  Daedalic style of the 7th century.
Compare: The Prosperosale collection: Lot  522  but facing left.
In the Numismatica Genevensis SA auction nr. 7, under lot nr. 102 you are able to study
25 fractions of these beautiful small silver coins. However not one facing to the right ! 
They all came from the famous  Herbert Cahn collection, who admired these small Jewels.
