DEMETRIOS I SOTER KING OF SYRIA.  162-150 B.C. Tetradrachm. Antioch mint. diademed head of Demetrios
with close-cropped beard facing right. all within  laurel wreath. / Tyche enthroned left holding sceptre in
right hand and cornucopiae in left.  Monogram in outer left field.
Very rare portrait type with slight beard. exceptionally well centered and struck. an outstanding coin.
Extremely fine.

Demetrios was the son of Seleucus IV  and sent to rome as a hostage in exchange for his uncle
Antiochus IV. In 162  Demetrios escaped secretly with the help of some friends, including the
historian Polybius. He overthrew the boy king Antiochus V and his guardian.
He faced the revolt of Timarchus satrap of Babylon to win an easy victory in 161.
He was hailed at Seleucia as soter ( Savior). He conquered Judaea and won the reluctant
recognation of the roman senate.
