The early Indo-Greeks and their antecedents ( London , 1975), 103 d.
Bop. 164, Serie 1c. Rare. Excellent style and large flan. Nice old cabinet tone.
Extremely fine.
Demetrios I the Indo Greek King, son of Euthydemus ( 230-190 BC.)
was associated in his father s rule from circa 205  BC .  Circa 180 BC extended
his realm beyond the Hindu Kush into the Kabul Valley.
The elephant 's skin headdress he
wears on the attic  weight silver of his sole reign must symbolize his
conquest of ( into) India, while the exceptional artistry per se suggests this
coinage was commemorative in character.

Until comparatively recently the very notion of Greek kings in Bactria or India would have
been a fanciful one. However there is a verse from the  English poet Chaucer who lived in
the 14th century. he wrote in "The knight's tale":

With  arcite, in stories as men find
The grete Emetrius, the king of Inde,
Upon a steede bay, trapped in steele,
Covered with clothe of gold, diapered wele
Came riding like the God of Armes, Mars !
