Diademed bust right of Ptolemy I Soter ( founder of the dynasty), wearing aegis around neck.
Reverse.ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, in front date (regnal year 4=78-77BC) behind mint signature ΠΑ.
Sv.1850, SNG Cop 379, Noeske 330
Good very fine, dark patina.

The mint signature ΠΑ is that of ΠΑ(ΦΟΣ) Paphos,Cyprus. No reasonable explanation has been put forward why the mint ofAlexandria adopted the Paphian mint signature. The two issues can easily be seperated by their distinct style. In the case of Ptolemy XII mint attribution presents no problem. When the Alexandrians elected for Ptolemy XII as their king they also chose his brother to be king of Cypurs, known to history as Ptolemy of cyprus. So for the first time during the Ptolemaic period Cyprus had its own king and each struck coinage for their domain.
