Ptolemy IX Soter II died December 81 BC and his daughter Cleopatra Beneniki III became regent. She married Ptolemy XI Alexander IIsometime in June 80 BC and after about two weeks he murderedher.Cleopatra Bereniki III was a popular queen and the Alexandrian's,outraged, dragged this Ptolemy from the palace and murdered him in thegymnasium.Ptolemy XII, who was in exile at the court of Mithradates VIwas called to Egypt as the new king.Otto Morkholm in his imprtant article ( ANSMN 20, 1975'Dated silver coins of Alexandria') suggests ,and in accordance with documentaryevidence, that coins dated regnal one may well belong to the periodof Cleopatra Bereniki's short duration as regent since most of the year wasoccupied by the reigns of Ptolemy IX and Cleopatra Bereniki III.Thestyle of the obverse of this coin is certainly closer to the new style tetradrachma coins ofPtolemy IX than those of Ptolemy XII.
