These coins were earlier misattributed by Mitchiner to Sankaragana, the 6th century Kalachuri king of Mahishmati. Recent research suggests, however, that Gunatunga was a Rashtrakuta ruler of the 8th century.
Our specimen has the king's full name clearly visible.
