Eugene S. Ferguson [editor]: Engineering Reminiscences (1815-40) of George Escol Sellers, 1965, xix, 203 pages, illustrated with halftone plates of personages and machines, quarto, grey cloth, plastic jacket as issued. Fine. Originally appearing in The American Machinist between 1884 and 1893, the narratives of Sellers, who was a constant visitor to, and an alert observer of, the mechanical shops in Philadelphia, provide a first hand vision of great importance to numismatists. Two chapters especially, those dealing with Jacob Perkins in Philadelphia and The United States Mint, warrant careful reading to discover clues and insights to the coining process, for, although Ferguson notes that Sellers was 75 at the time of his writing, he had an uncommonly good memory and had bales and boxes of papers, drawings and artifacts to refer to and which he used with skill and candor.
