Denomination : ;Billon dirhem.
Reference : Mitchiner Ancient - 1493 to 94. G-236
Size : 28.7 x 29.8 mm. Weight : 2.86 grams.
Grade : VF/F but reverse largely obliterated during countermarking of the obverse.
Obverse : Head of the King right, in Sassanian style, with a cursive Greek inscription reading 'SIRO ShAHO' to the right. There are two 'beetle' countermarks, one on the neck and the other in front of the mouth.
Reverse : Sassanian style fire altar, but crudely engraved and crudely struck (as is normal for the issue), but mostly flattened when the countermarks were applied to the obverse.
This 'beetle' countermark might possibly represent a bird. It is common to see these this a single countermark, but having two on one coin is unusual.
