An extremely appealing example of an ancient Roman silver antoninianus minted under Emperor Gallienus, (Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus Augustus). Struck circa 258 - 259 AD. 


The obverse with a superb portrait of Gallienus. The Emperor is shown with a csort, curly beard and wearing radiate crown and cuirass. The legend reading:


GALLIENVS P[ivs] F[elix] AVG[vstvs]


"Gallienus, Dutiful and Wise Augustus" 


The reverse with Gallienus in full military dress, shown facing a trophy of war and holding a long spear. The legend reading:


VIRTVS AVGG


"To the Bravery of the Augusti"



Roman Emperor's were often shameless self promoters and Gallienus was no exception. The obverse of this fine silver coin offers a superb portrait of the ruler, while the reverse shows him in full military attire, carrying a spear and stood next to an emblem of Roman military success.


Struck from excellent metal, perfectly centred, with a portrait of the finest style.
