A magnificent, large ancient Roman centenionalis, minted under the second son of Constantine the Great, Emperor Constantius II (Flavius Julius Constantius Augustus). Struck 337 - 361 AD at the Constantinople mint.


The obverse with a superb portrait of Constantius. He is shown wearing pearl-diademed and with draped, and cuirassed bust. The legend reads:


D[ominvs] N[oster] CONSTANTIVS P[ivs] F[elix] AVG[vstvs]


"Our Lord Constantius, Dutiful and Wise Augustus"


The reverse with Roman soldier in fully military attire, brandishing an oval shield and thrusting a spear downwards into a fallen horseman. The legend reading:


FEL[ix] TEMP REPARATIO


"Happy Times Returned!"



An impressive and unusually well preserved example with an awesome reverse depiction, showing a brutal snapshot of ancient warfare.
