A well provenanced ancient Greek silver stater from the city of Metapontum, Lucania. Struck circa 330 - 290 BC.


The obverse with the head of the goddess Demeter. She is shown with long, flowing hair, bound with a wreath of grain ears, wearing a single drop earring and necklace.

The reverse with a ripe ear of barley, leaf on left with lighted altar above, Y? on right. The retrograde legend reading:

Metapontum was a wealthy Magna Graecian colony whose iconic coinage became widely traded throughout the ancient world. This charming silver stater depicts a bulging ear of barley on the reverse, the crop to which the city-state owed much of her wealth. The obverse with a beautiful portrait of the goddess of the harvest, Demeter.
