An ancient Roman Julio-Claudian marble portrait head, dating to 27 BC – 68 AD.

Over-life-sized, this marble portrait head of a young man has the characteristically Julio-Claudian, youthful, idealised face and carefully carved hair brushed forward. The wide almond-shaped eyes are deeply set beneath softly modelled brows, the mouth showing just the hint of a sneer, the ears finely detailed. It is worth noting that some elements, most notably the beard, are later (likely late 3rd century) additions, bringing the original sculpture in line with fashions of the time.

A powerful piece of over-life-sized Roman sculpture with an original surface.

During the later Roman period original marbles were frequently re-worked.  This example, with its strong beard cut into the marble, was likely re-worked in the late third century, when Rome experienced a crisis and was governed by short-ruling 'soldier Emperors'.  These men were often former generals and were shown bearded, a fact that surely influenced the fashions of the day.

Height of head alone: 9  7/8 inches.

Height mounted: 14  7/8 inches.

Condition: Good, with an original surface, eyes partially restored.

Provenance:

Ex. French Private collection, acquired in the 1970's. With a Spanish export license.
