In the Dumbarton Collection and the Whittemore Collection, from Arcadius and Honorius to the Ascenssion of Anastasius. By Grierson and Mays, 1992 520 pp. 37 pls. (New)

This is the first fully illustrated catalogue to be published of a major collection of late Roman and early Byzantine imperial coins. It follows the general layout of the Byzantine volumes in the Dumbarton Oaks series, with a substantial introduction dealing with the history of the coinage, including iconography, mints, and monetary system, but differs in that all the coins are illustrated in the plates. Almost one thousand coins are illustrated.

This is by light-years the greatest reference for this period...[The] introductory material is simply awesome, with the most intricate workings of the mints explained in plain English. The arrangement is by emperor, coin type, then mint, and nearly a thousand coins are illustrated on 37 excellent plates with facing catalogue text for the ultimate in convenience. If your collecting interests include late-Roman coins you simply must have this book!" --The Celator
