Scotland, James VI (1567-1625), gold Rider of 100 Shillings, 1598, seventh coinage, armoured King on horseback galloping right, date .1598. in exergue, all within inner beaded circle, initial mark quatrefoil, .IACOBVS. 6. D. G. R. SCOTOR., rev. crowned arms of Scotland, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark quatrefoil, .SPERO. MELIORA. (Burns - see note; SCBI 35:1168; SCBI58:1287-8 S.5458). Toned and a little short of flan, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as AU50, a very rare date.

NGC Certification 583940-010 - the only examples graded.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James, by the Grace of God, King of Scotland" and on the reverse "I hope for better things."

The coin appears merely as a note in Burns as he was only aware of one example reported to him and perhaps was reluctant to list it with a number until further confirmation. We can only trace one other example through the auction market-place the ex Robertson/Sinton/La Riviere piece.
