| Male head (of Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, 165-104 BC), right, bearded. Grenetis., Prow, right, on which stands trophy with two spears and shield., Issuer : Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus. A denarius of great quality! Despite the crystallised silver and the rusty die, the coin is still in a very good state of preservation, with lots of details, which is rare for these denarii, and therefore sought after by collectors. Denarius struck by the famous Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus after his naval victory at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC. Major political figure at the end of the Republic and the Triumvirate, and a great ally of Julius Caesar before his assassination. He was first allied with Caesar's assassins, then sided with Mark Antony, who gave him the consulship in 32 BC, before switching sides to Octavian the following year, knowing that he would win at Actium, but he died before the battle actually took place. He was also the great-grandfather of the emperor Nero., AHENOBAR, CN·DOMITIVS·IMP |
