L. Valerius Flaccus AR Denarius (19.4mm, 4.70 g.)
Rome mint, struck 108-107 BC
Obv. Winged and draped bust of Victory right, mark of value below chin.
Rev. Mars advancing left, holding spear and trophy; apex to left, stalk of grain to right.
Crawford 306
VF+, nicely toned.
Three interesting "al marco" weight adjustment marks on obverse edges, to lower the weight of the coin by removing a small amount of metal to the standard level. Despite the marks, the effective reduction was never carried out in this case. Overweight 4.70 gm.
