POMPEIUS MAGNUS AR silver denarius, struck by SEXTUS POMPEIUS, 42-40 BC, in SICILY. MAG PIVS IMP ITER, bare head of Pompey the Great right between lituus and capis. Reverse - Neptune left, foot on prow, between brothers Anapias and Amphinomus, parents on their shoulders. CLAS ET OR MARIT EX SC in two lines in exergue. RSC 17, RCV 1392, valued at $960 in VF. Rare. 23mm, 3.8g.

Considering how far out from the 'edge beads' the flan is on this coin, it is almost certainly overstruck on an existing coin flan. Judging by the many little triangular nicks along the edge, it seems most likely that this coin, being somewhat hurriedly struck at an irregular mint, simply recycled an old serratus flan. Interesting!
