Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus AR silver denarius. Struck 88 BC. Helmeted bust of Mars right, seen from behind. Reverse - CN LENTVL, Victory in biga right. RCV 254. 17mm, 3.5g.
Three 'al marco' weight adustment marks, (chisel-type gouges) on the obverse.
Apparently 'weight adjusted' - Some republican coins from this period, bear one or more blunt tool-marks on their surfaces. This was evidently done to lower the weight of the coin (by removing a small amount of metal) to the standard level, as edge-trimming was not possible on the serrati due to the cut edges.
