Date: c. 1st - 3rd Centuries A.D.
Description: A Roman terra cotta oil lamp, discus decorated with a standing figure of Harpocrates, with a finger held to his lips, and holding a lotus flower.
Length : Approximately 4 inches (9 cm.).
Note: Fully intact.
Comments: Harpocates was derived by the Greeks from the Egyptian god Harpa-Khruti (Horus the Child) who was portrayed as a small boy with a finger held to his lips--an Egyptian gesture symbolizing childhood, which the Greeks mistook for a hush of silence.
