India, Gandhara Janapada, anonymous, c. 6th-5th century BC, AR shana or 1/8 satamana (14mm, 1.43gm), [Taxila]. Six-armed "Taxila" symbol with pellet between arms. Uniface, concave fabric. Pieper AICR 12; MACW 4079f. Very Fine.

Ancient Taxila was a great commercial city to the east of the River Indus in what is today modern Pakistan. At the time of Darius I (521-486 BC), Taxila and its environs became the India satrapy of the Persian empire. The Indian satamana was equivalent to two Persian sigloi. Coins such as the one offered here would have still been in circulation when Alexander the Great (336-323 BC) brought Taxila into the Macedonian empire.
