Mahmud Shah was the first of the Khalji sultans of Malwa. He was a distant relative of Hushang Shah, whose son was completely incompetent, to the point where the nobles invited Mughith Shah, Mahmud's father, to take the throne. Mughith declined, but nominated his son, who had a successful reign. On this coin, he calls himself sikandar al-thani, the "second Alexander."
