Comments The East India Company acquired the mint at Banares from the Raja of Awadh in 1776, soon after the Battle of Plassey. The coins they issued from this mint showed a double regnal year, the fixed RY 17 (the RY of the first British issues) and then the progressive RY until the death of Shah Alam II in his RY 49.

In his listing of this series, Pridmore shows the obverse mintmarks for RY 23 as consisting of the fish, the clover sprig and a circle (see previous listing). However, this coin retains the leaf sprig in place of the circle, consistent with both the previous and later coins of the series. This coin is therefore an unlisted type, presumably rare and in nearly SUPERB condition!
