Pupienus Maximus and Balbinus were elevated to co-emperors by the Senate after Gordian I and II were killed in their struggle to depose Maximinus I. The Praetorians who had stood to profit from the Gordiani became agitated and pushed for the elevation of Gordian III instead. When Pupienus and Balbinus began to distrust each other, the Praetorians seized the opportunity and killed both emperors after only 99 days of reign.
