zoom view

Thasos was a city in Thrace on the Island of Thasos.  These coins were struck under Roman rule, after Thasos was incorporated into the Roman Province of Macedonia..

Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.

Size : 32.0 x 33.9 mm   Weight : 16.02 grams.

Reference : Sear-1759

Grade : VF but rough grainy metal due to over cleaning.  The flan is slightly bent, although that is seen on a very high percentage of this type of coin, which suggest there may have been some semi-official reason for doing so.  Many of the Celtic imitations of this type have the same bend, so it may be the Celts who were doing this to them.

Obverse : Head of Dionysos right, wearing a wreath of ivy in his hair.

Reverse : Herakles standing left, holding a club, with a lion's skin over his arm, with HRAKLEOUS SWTHROS QASIWN around, with a monogram between Herakles' leg and club.
