Ancient Coins - Severus Alexander, AD 222 to 235. AE 25. From Alexandria Troas. NICE TEMPLE TYPE
zoom view

Denomination : 25 mm bronze.  Mint : Alexandria Troas

Date : This type is not dated, so we cannot pin it down exactly, but there are coins from Anazarbus in Cilicia with a nearly identical bust style and probably by the same celator,  that are dated to AD 230/231.  It is likely this coin is also from that year to very close to it.

Size : 24.0 X 25.4 mm.  Weight : 8.79 grams.

Reference : I have not yet found an exact reference for this variety but it is very similar to BMC 118 (slightly different inscriptions), and somewhat similar to Bellinger A331 and SNG Copenhagen 164 (different bust type).

Grade : Fine / VF.  Weak in the inscriptions on the obverse but very nice on the reverse.

Obverse : Bust of Severus Alexander with IMP S ALEXANDER AV around (or similar as a few letters are too weak to read).

Reverse : Temple of Apollo Smintheus viewed in perspective, in which stands a male figure that could be either Apollo or Severus Alexander , with COL AVG AL TRO around.
