Denomination : Bronze Sextans.  Mint : Rome.

Date : ca. 280 to 269 BC.

Reference : CR 14/6.  Sd 12. Haeberlin Pl 40 #6.  Sear 551

Size : 36.3 x 37.7 mm.  Weight : 53.24 grams.

Grade : XF for wear, but the surfaces are slightly rough.  Dark brown patina.  An fairly bold attractive specimen.

Obverse : Scallop-shell with 2 pellets below.

Reverse : Caduceus flanked by 2 pellets.

The two pellets mean this coin is 2/12 (or 1/6) of an As, which is a sextens. These are crudely cast coins, and normally have some casting flaws resulting from air bubbles caught in the mold. This examples has smaller bubbles, and also shows clear signs of how the sprew was removed when it came from the mold.
