Denomination : Bronze triens
Mint : Rome, ca. 280 to 269 BC.
Reference : Sear 538
Size : 47.1 x 50.5 mm. Weight : 88.10 grams.
Grade : VF / Fine with a very good hard dark brown patina. Some areas on the top part of the reverse (dolphin) have had some scraping during cleaning. The dolphin looks better on the hand than it does on the image.
Obverse : Thunderbolt with four pellets to the sides.
Reverse : A dolphin with four pellets below.
The four pellets, mean that the denomination was 4/12 (or 1/3) of an As, which is a triens. These are crudely cast coins, and normally have some casting flaws resulting from air bubbles caught in the mold. This examples has a minimum of these types of flaws.
