zoom view

Denomination : Silver 1/8 shekel.

Date : The dating of the Kings of Byblos in this period is not well understood and we can only say that Ainel ruled in the 4th century BC, some time before 333 BC.

Size
: 10.2 x 11.0 mm.  Weight : 0.91 grams.  (A SMALL COIN)

Reference : S-6014.

Grade : gVF and fairly nice for the type..

Obverse : Galley left with lion's head prow figure, with two hoplites holding round shields, with a hippocamp below.

Reverse : Lion attacking a bull, with with a Phoenician inscription above, naming "Ainel, king of Gebel" (Gebel being another name for Byblos).  On such a tiny coin the inscriptions can be difficult to read, but this one is actually fairly clear.

This coin came to me identified as Adramelek, but I read it is Ainel.
