Ancient Coins - Papal Lead Bulla. Pope Paul III Farnese. AD 1534 to 1579.
zoom view

Period : Papal States.  Pope Paul III Farnese. AD 1534 to 1579.

Material : Lead. The two orange-red spots appear to be traces of wax.

Size : 37.9 x 39.4 x 6.1 mm. Weight : 46.70 grams.

Condition : light wear, with minor oxidation of the lead, and some scratches on the reverse. But not bad for a bulla of this period.

Design : Heads of Saint Peter (on the right) and Saint Paul (on the left) with a cross between them, and two vertical lines of inscription reading 'PA' (for Saint Paul) and 'PE' (for Saint Peter), above the cross.  On the reverse at the top are six fleurs in a triangluar pattern, which is part of the design of the Papal arms during his rule.  Below there is a three line inscription reading 'PAVLVS PAPA III' (meaning Pope Paul the third), with a fleur at the beginning and end of each line.

These Papal bulla were the seals that once hung from offical Papal documents, and part of the cord that once attached it to the document still remains inside the bulla.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WHITE COATINGS ON EARLY LEAD SEALS ARE LEAD OXIDE, WHICH IS VERY TOXIC IF INGESTED. THESE SEALS MUST BE HANDLED WITH CARE, AND ONE SHOULD NEVER LET CHILDREN HANDLE THEM (THIS IS TRUE FOR ANY ANCIENT OR MEDIEVAL LEAD OBJECT).

This particular seal only has traces of lead oxide so is probably fairly safe to handle, but I give this worning on all lead artifacts I sell.
