Ancient Coins - Otacilia Severa, AD 244 to 249, AE sestertius. Very rare type. Millennium series
zoom view

Otacilia Severa was the wife of Philip I.

Denomination : AE Sestertius.  Mint : Rome.

Date : AD 247 to 248.

Size : 25.5 x 29.6 mm.  Weight : 18.61 grams.

Reference : RIC 201 (hyb) where it is listed as an antelope, rather than a European moose, but that is just an error in RIC.

Rarity and Signficance : The only millennium animal type normally associated with Otacilia Severa is the Hippo, but these examples with the European moose are known to exist, but to the best of my knowledge there are only five specimens now know.  It is generally accepted that these are mint error struck with a reverse die intended to be used on coins of her son, Philip II.

Grade : VF but the obverse is rough and has weak inscriptions.

Obverse : Head of Otacilia Severa right, with MARCIA OTACIL SEVERA AVG around.

Reverse : European moose walking right, with SAECVLARES AVGG around, and S C below.
