Ruler : Al Zahi rukn al din Baybars I Al Bunduqdari ruled from AH 659 to 676 (AD 1260 to 1277).    The Mamluk's were slaves of the Ayyubids, who over threw their masters in the AH 640's (AD 1240's) and established a fairly long and relatively stable dynasty that lasted until they were conquored by the Ottomans in AH 922 (AD 1517).

Denomination : Silver Dirham.

Mint & Date : This type was minted at al-Qahire (Cairo in Egypt) but the mint name is off the flan.  It is dated AH 669 with only the last two digits visiible on the coin.   It should be noted that to even get a partial date on these is good, as many specimens, including both illustrated by Mitchiner, have the dates either illegable or off the flan.

Reference : Album-883.  Mitchiner Islamic 1160 to 1161.

Size : 19.3 x 21.3 mm.  Weight : 2.73 grams.

Grade : VF.

Obverse and reverse : Arabic inscriptions with a depiction of Lion at the bottom of the reverse.
