zoom view

Denomination : Bronze 19 mm quarter unit (probably a hemiobol).

Date : There seems to be a lot of confusion over exactly when this King reigned.  Some reference (Sear Greek and Mitchiner) place him as the Last of the Bactrian Kings with a reign of 40 to 1 BC.  Other references place him a century earlier from 104 to 90 BC, and yet others place him in the period of 90 to 70 BC.  In coin archives you can find this exact type with listed for all three periods by different auction houses.  There are some strong stylistic similarities between his coin and some coins of Heliokles who ruled from 135 to 10 BC, so I suspect the earlier of the three possible reigns is more likely.

Size : 20.6 x 20.3 mm square.  Weight : 8.48 grams.

Reference : SNG-ANS 1349-50.  BC Series 9B.  Sear Greek 7744.

Grade : aXF with a very dark (almost black) patina.  A very nice example of this type in spite of a very minor roughness.

Obverse : Head of Hermaios right, with BASILEWS SWTHROS ERMAIOY around.

Reverse : Horse walking right, with a Karosthi inscription around, and a mint mark below.
