Metz is a city in the Lorraine region of northeast France. at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers.

Denomination : Silver denier.

Date : AD 1171 to 1173.

Size : 15.1 x 15.6 mm.  Weight : 0.73 grams.

Reference : de Saulcy 99 (suppl); Wendling II/E/i/2.

Grade : VF, toned.  While there are weak areas with parts of the inscription missing, this is still a reasonably nice example of this type with a clear portrait.  Fully struck specimens are rare, and one with a full strike was sold in 2007 on Kunker auction 121, lot 530,  for 500 euro's.

Obverse : Bust of Frederick left, with FRIDERIC' B around, although only the first and last few letters are struck up (it is normal for this type to have incomplete inscriptions).

Reverse : Short cross with a crescent and pellet in opposing quadrants, with METENSIS around.
