zoom view

This type is close imitative of a Macedonian King Philip III tetradrachm, and is probably from the Danubian area.

Date : ca. 3rd century BC.

Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.

Reference : Similar to Lanz (Kelten im Osten) #898, but is even closer to the originals in style than his specimen.

Size : 26.7 x 29.0 mm.  Weight : 16.36 grams.

Grade : gVF with very nice strike and style.

Obverse : Head of Herakles right.

Reverse : Zeus seated left, holding an eagle, with elongated H below the throne, two monograms below his arm, and a very clear FILIPPOV inscription to the right (note that the Y is very clearly shown as a V.

A very interesting example and probably from the very beginning of the Celtic imitations of Philip III series.
