Denomination : Silver stater.  Mint : Citium (or Kition)

Date : ca. 449 to 425 BC.

Size : 20.5 x 22.0 mm.  Weight : 10.11 grams.

Reference : Sear-5723.

Grade : VF/VG with a very rough reverse.   The reverse is a little more clear on the coin than it appears on the image.  Most examples of this type have some type of serious problems, and this is actually not a bad example of the type.

Obverse : Herakles advancing right, wearing the lion's skin.

Reverse : Lion attaching a stag, with Azbaal's name above in Aramaic.

This coin came to me from an old time collection in the Ottawa area.  When I received it, the obverse was totally indistinct due to someone having incorrectly cleaned it from a heavy horn silver incrustation, resulting in a combination pitting and re-plating of silver from the silver chloride.  I was able to remove much of the re-plated silver (some stil remaines), which made the obverse type visible, but there was nothing I could do about the corrosion that already existed.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COIN IS ATTRIBUTED TO A CYPRIOT MINT, AND THERE ARE SOME COUNTRIES INCLUDING THE USA TO WHICH IT CANNOT BE SENT. DO NOT ORDER THIS COIN UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU CAN LEGALLY IMPORT IT TO THE COUNTRY IN WHICH YOU LIVE.
