Ancient Coins - Byzantine lead seal impression. 11 th Century AD.
zoom view

Period : Byzantine, ca. 11th th century AD.

Material : Lead.

Size : 26.1 x 28.1 x 2.7 mm.

Obverse : Saint Demetrius or Saint George shown forward from the chest up, nimbate and holding a spear and shield.  There are traces of an inscription but I have not yet been able to figure them out.

Reverse : an inscription that appears to mean "THE LORD PRESERVE THEOPHILOS AP(OHUPATROS) AND STRANGOS AT GERMANIKEIA" (a few of the letters are weak).

Germanikeia was a town in Turkey which was a major staging area for the Byzantine military at the time, but I have not been able to find any information of the idenity of the Theophilios, Apohupatros and Strangos named on this seal.  But they must have been higher placed government or military officials.  I have no reason to believe that the Theophilos names was the Emperor of that name.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WHITE COATINGS ON EARLY LEAD SEALS ARE LEAD OXIDE, WHICH IS VERY TOXIC IF INGESTED.  THESE SEALS MUST BE HANDLED WITH CARE, AND ONE SHOULD NEVER LET CHILDREN HANDLE THEM (THIS IS TRUE FOR ANY ANCIENT OR MEDIEVAL LEAD OBJECT).
