Alexander the Great ruled from 336 to 323 BC, but most of the coins struck in his name were posthumous issue, some (as this one) more than two centuries after his death.

Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.  Mint : Mesembria

Date : ca. 150 to 120 BC (although Price mentions the hoard evidence is a little confusing and it could be a little either side of this).

Reference : Price-1029 (same reverse die).

Size : 30.3 x 31.2 mm.  Weight : 16.58 grams.  (A VERY BROAD FLAN).

Grade : XF with the original nearly black hoard patina intact.  The patina is attractive and probably should not be cleaned, however it made this a very difficult coin to photograph and the obverse is significantly nicer than the image suggests.  There is a very slight double strike on the reverse.

Obverse : Head of Herakles right, wearing the lion's skin.

Reverse : Zeus seated left, holding a sceptre and eagle, with BASILEWS to the right and ALEXANDROU to the left, with LA below the throne and a Corinthian helmet by Zeus' knee.
