During the winter of AD 17-16, the Roman 5th Legion Alaudae suffered the untimate disgrace for a legion when they lost their eagle standard to a Germanic tribe called the Sugambri.   In 12 BC, under the Roman general Drusus, the Romans returned and defeated the Sugambri.

The history books a silent as to what happened to the 5th Legion's standard, but this coin appears to commemorate the recovery of such a standard, the the issue date of 12 BC strongly suggests the kneeling barbarian is a member of Sugambri, returing that standard as a sign of their surrender.
