Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.

Date : I don't think the exact date of these very early owl coins has  yet been determined with certainty, but was probably prior to 480 BC and probably not before 500 BC.

Size : 20.3 x 22.0 mm.  Weight : 16.98 grams.

Reference : Sear-1842.

Grade : gVF/VF.   The obverse has exceptional centering, with the nose and chin touching the edge but not off the edge, and at the same time 100% of the helmet crest if visible (you seldom get both on these).   The reverse was struck with what was probably a slightly worn die, and is not as well centred as the obverse, with only part of the inscription on the flan.

Obverse : Head of Athena right.

Reverse : Owl standing right, with AQE to the right (but the A and half of the Q is off the flan), as is the olive sprig to the left.   The lump of silver behind the owl appears to be due to a die flaw.
