Denomination : Silver stater.    Date : late 4th to early 3rd century BC.

Reference : SNG Cop. 236.

Size : 22.3 x 24.3 mm.  Weight : 10.75 grams.

Grade : VF but with obverse flat areas..

Obverse : Two naked belt wrestlers grappling, the appears to be a very faint letter H between them, and part of an X visible to the right.

Reverse : A slinger walking right while discharging his sling, with EST below his arm, and a triskeles to the left.

Provenance : ex Darcy Phalen collection. ex Rauch Oct. 17, 2005 auction 76, lot 337.

This a rare variation for a numbers of reasons.  First, the triskeles is to the left of the slinger, while on most types it is to the right below the arm.  Second, the inscription is an abbreviated form of the city name horizontally below the slingers arm, while on most types it is the full name vertically to the left.   Finally, the wrestlers are wearing belts with the one wrestler grabbing the belt and shoulder of the other who is grabbing at that wrestler's leg.

This is a type that seldom comes up for sale, but besides the reference and provenance listed above, a few other examples are recorded.  Vente Publique 32, 20 Oct 1966, no. 134 (realized 1550 SF, plus 10% buyer's fee); Giessener Mnzhandlung 102, 24 May 2000, no. 291 (realized 6200 DM plus 15% buyer's fee = approx. $3300).   Clearly this rare variation has consistently sold for several times  what the usual types sell for.  With the weak areas this specimen is not going to bring the kinds of prices those sold at, so I have priced it accordingly.  To the best of my knowledge there are only about six examples of this type known.
