A highly interesting portrait variant from the large horseman type issue of Hieron II, Syracuse, 275-215 BC. Size: Æ27, weight: 16.72 grams. Estimated to have been made circa 241-218 BC. Diademed head left / Horseman riding right, holding spear; udentified symbol below. cf. SNG ANS 924.  

 

This coin always displays a very masculine portrait of a mature man with a pronounced jar. Our coin displays a very different more delicate portrait of a young prince with a smaller pointed jar, fuller chins, much in family with portraits of Hierons son Hieronymus on his silver coins of c. 215 BC.      

 

Condition: Good VF, fine light brown patina.
