SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AE sestertius. Rome, 196 AD. L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII, laureate, cuirassed bust right, seem from slightly behind. Reverse - P M TR P III COS II P P, Victory advancing left, holding wreath, SC in fields. Cohen 420, RCV 6424. 31mm, 28.6g.
Struck to commemorate the victory of Severus' faction during the civil war. However, direct mention or glorification of civil war (IE celebrating the deaths of fellow countrymen) was generally frowned upon, so usual Imperial policy was to leave references to civil war victories deliberately vague.
